Rose and Venus
Clients: Art Makes Place & The Community Builders
Two ADA Planters for the Mildred C. Hailey development in Boston, MA. About a year earlier when I talked with local residents about this new garden, a handful of kids mentioned roses and Venus fly traps as their favorite plants.

I themed the exterior view of the planters after a rose and Venus fly trap to symbolize a neighborhood that works tirelessly to protect its beauty through their unapologetic community.
Community Engagement
Two community activities allowed for direct ideas and conversations with the Mildred C. Hailey community. Most of the engagement came from children who enjoyed the interactive art making activities and were quick to share their favorite plants (roses and venus fly traps).
The enthusiasm from the children helped reinforce an idea for a Community Painting Day where residents would support the painting of four lawn chairs.
Inspired by the engagement sessions and further community research, I designed the inward-facing scenes as intersecting circles of support, joy, and culture in Jackson Square. I even included a few of the kids I spoke with (I loved their distinct hairstyles).

Original Sketches
Highlighting the intersecting circles of support in the interior designs. The exterior facing designs (East and West) show the Venus fly trap and rose designs. The short sides include abstracted elements from both plants: the rose's thorns and the Venus fly trap's iconic mouth.
